Non-financial performance overview
Our work during 2019–20 towards our vision—outstanding natural places that enhance Australia’s well-being—is presented in our annual performance statement at Chapter 4 - Annual Performance Statement of this report. Throughout 2019–20 we worked to achieve outcomes that support our vision and our three key purposes:
- Resilient places and ecosystems: we continued to invest resources in monitoring and recovering threatened species, and monitoring and controlling invasive species. The proportion of threatened species with ‘stable or increasing’ population trends has remained stable; and the proportion of priority invasive species with ‘decreasing or stable population’ trends has also increased significantly. In our marine parks, management plans and advisory committees contribute to effective management of marine reserves, while established long term monitoring sites continue to deliver valuable baseline information.
- Multiple benefits for Traditional Owners and local communities: we continued to work together with Traditional Owners to increase the level of Indigenous employment, and to grow economic activity for Indigenous people in our jointly managed parks.
- Amazing destinations: this year, visitation to our parks was impacted by safety and travel restrictions due to COVID-19. Although we welcomed fewer visitors to our parks this year (990,993 this year, down from 1.33 million), visitor satisfaction increased to 95 percent.
Our non-financial performance is also summarised in Table 2: Director of National Parks non-financial performance results for 2019–20.
