National baseline report on quality use of medicines and medicines safety

In October 2019, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Health Council approved the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council to prepare a national baseline report on quality use of medicines and medicines safety, to identify areas for action to reduce medication-related harm. These areas include improvement of current frameworks, new best-practice models and new national standards.

The Australian Government Department of Health contracted the Commission to draft the national baseline report, focusing initially on polypharmacy, transitions of care, and the use of antipsychotic medicines associated with aged care homes. Development of the report began in 2019–20, and the report will be completed in 2020–21.
